"Collection In Progress For Christmas Trees"
Collecting is in progress for the Christmas party fund at Gardiner. Each year at this time a collection is taken to provide funds with which candy, nuts, and fruit are purchased for Santa to give the children at the annual Christmas party at the old Gardiner School House. In charge of the task this year are Mrs. “Corky” Dillon and Pat King. So far approximately one third of the territory has been covered and a total of $19.50 is reported.
This year the date set for the program and pot-luck dinner is December 23rd. All members of the community and their friends are invited to attend. Mrs. James Minty, program chairman, promises an entertaining time to all.
“Black Fish Seen Jumping in the Bay”
When blackfish start swimming in our waters it means the end of most of the salmon population for awhile. Being of a species of the small tooth whale and usually found in large schools, the appearance of blackfish means the disappearance of salmon. Much to our regret, several have been seen jumping in Discovery Bay by members of the Gardiner community.
“Gardiner Socials”
Given by the Mesdames Wallace Norton, Sr., and Jr., a stork shower for Mrs. William Movius the early part of last week supplied many beautiful and useful gifts. The cake was pink and white with a stork in the center. For entertainment the ladies played twenty questions and dropped clothespins into bottles. Prizes were awarded as follows: first, Mrs. William Movius; second, Mrs. Herman Nebel; “bobbie prize,” Mrs. Carl Blakesley.
Present besides those already mentioned were: Mrs. Nels Nelson, Mrs. Charles Godson, Mrs. James Minty, Mrs. Summers, Mrs. John Campbell, Mrs. Larry Movius, Mrs. Floyd O’Dell, Mrs. Jack Movius, Mrs. Phillip Gettleman, Mrs. Louise Movius, Mrs. Herman Cohn, Mrs. Ted Lewis, Mrs. Larry Benson, and Mrs. Bud Padelford.
From now on, the teen-agers of Gardiner plan to have a party at the old Gardiner School every two weeks. Friday, December 8th from 7 to 10:30 everyone gathered for the purpose of having a good time. Mrs. James Minty played the piano for the group. Light was furnished this week by one Coleman gas lamp, one kerosene lantern, and two candles (the light situation is improving). Refreshments were brought this time by various members of the group. They included: cookies, cupcakes, sandwiches, apples and candy.
Later in the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd O’Dell dropped in. Those at the party were: Esther Murrey, Nanna and Loren Padelford, Ted Peabody, Carol and Gerald Major, Bob Minty, Carl Brecker, Varbara, Gracie and David Cohn, Bob and Arlene Machado, Dick Movius, Charlie, Anna and Patricia Erickson, Shirly, Stella and Eddie O’Dell, Buddy Nebel, Leona and Dorothy Schaeffer, and “yours truly.” Everyone dropped in at the “Plaque Café” for coffee and cokes afterwards.
Wreath making was held by the Women’s Club Wednesday, December 6th at the Louise Movius home. Very few turned out this week, so give the credit to Louise Movius, Louise King, Hulda Cohn, Georgie Knapp, Laura Blakesley, and Marge Minty. All the wreaths were finished and Christmas corsages made and taken up to Norton’s Store. Mr. Norton has volunteered to sell them for the ladies, and has been doing a good job.
At the last meeting of the Gardiner Women’s Club December 15th, a Christmas party was the extent of progress. The ladies furnished the food in a potluck style; relieving the hostess, Mrs. James Minty, of most of the work involved. Practically all of the club members were present and the highlight of the party was the drawing of the numbers by which the gifts were distributed.
To initiate their new fireplace, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Blakesley entertained a few guests at their home with a card party Saturday night, December 16th.
“Announcements and Attractions” One of the many attractions at the Gardiner Store and service station is the TV set of Mr. and Mrs. Wally Norton. Quite a few of us catch ourselves starting out to only get groceries and go home, but end of seeing Soldad Gorkie, etc. . . . More fun.
All business meetings of the Rip and Bang and Snip and Stitch 4-H Clubs are to be postponed until sometime after Christmas.
Bud Nebel has decided that the lazy life is too much for him. He’s going to attend school . . . Stanford (he says).
